This compact pine has a very dense, multi-stemmed, shrub-like habit. It grows slowly to about 12 feet tall and 18 feet wide, forming a sort of umbrella-like, flat topped mound. It is a frequent addition to Japanese or Zen gardens, and can be selectively pruned for a more open, tree-like appearance.
Grow in well drained soil and full sun to part shade. Prefers clay-loam to sandy-loam soils, though is somewhat adaptive. Prune selectively to highlight its interesting branching structure and multi-stemmed nature.
