A very striking Maple because of the purple color of the underside of the leaf, which contracts attractively with the dark green leaf top. This maple grows moderately to about 40 feet tall and 30 feet wide, with an upright, spreading habit. Like other maples, Spaethii has tiny spring flowers followed by winged seedpods called sumara.
Grow in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Tolerant of may soil types, but performs best in clay-loam to sandy-loam soils. Both Spaethii Maple and the green-leafed Sycamore Maple are very salt tolerant.
