Spike muhly forms clumps of erect, wiry stems rising 8 to 24 inches from a hard crown. Perennial clumps can be 1 to 2 feet in diameter. The seed head is spike-like, emerging June and July, and is yellow. Leaves are narrow and light green. Grows about 2 feet tall and wide. Also called Wright's muhly.
