'Herbstonne' is an impressive Rudbeckia, growing 5 to 7 feet tall and about half as wide. It has warm yellow flowers, smaller than R. fulgida but maybe more numerous. The petals are recurved and surround a green central disc. Leaves are lance-like to oval and deep green. Plant at the back of the border with Buddleia, Joe-pye weed, taller ornamental grasses, and boltonia for an outstanding mid to late summer display.
Grow in full sun and well drained soil. Will grow in nearly any soil that is well drained. After the first bloom in summer, deadheading will result in a second bloom in early fall. Makes an excellent cut flower, and it dries well, also. Attracts butterflies and birds. Drought tolerant.
