This older Norway maple cultivar has maroon-purple spring foliage, fading to dark green in the summer. Schwedler is the “parent†of Crimson King and is a more vigorous grower and more cold hardy. Schwedler grows 40 to 60 feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide. It has a generally upright and rounded habit. Like other maples, this one has spring flowers followed by winged-seed pods called sumara.
Grow in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best leave color occurs when planted in full sun. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, except very sandy ones. Tolerant of mild drought. Generally tolerant of many urban pollutants. Shallow root system.
