Water Saving Tip:

Change spray sprinklers to low-flow bubbler or drip systems. Shrubs and trees are ideal candidates for this type of irrigation because the water is applied directly to the root zones.

Opuntia erinacea is a shrub that reaches 2' tall and forms 4' wide clumps. This cactus has pads that are 2.5" wide covered with areoles. Pink flowers, 2" in diameter, bloom in spring. The fruit is barrel-shaped, fleshy and may be covered with spines. It is edible. Fruit matures during the summer. This cactus is cold tolerant to 20 degrees F. Be careful handling this cactus as the fine hairs, also known as glochids, can irritate skin.
