Water Saving Tip:

Replace turf with groundcovers, trees, and shrubs. If you have areas where no one uses the grass, patches that do not grow well, or a turf area too small to water without runoff, consider replacing the turf with water-efficient landscaping.

Leatherleaf Powder Puff is a charming, mat forming evergreen perennial. Deep green, evergreen leaves form a dense mat about 1 inch tall that slowly spreads to about 18 inches across by creeping, rooting stems. Lavender blue, puff-ball flowers appear in spring, with flower stems standing to 4 inches tall. Use in rock garden, scree bed, alpine house, or trough. Also nice to line a sunny path as it provides winter interest. There are leatherleafs planted at the Washington Square Conservation Garden.
Provide a loose, well-drained soil in full sun. Follow a regular watering schedule, but protect from excessive winter moisture. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring. Hardy to -20 degrees F.
