Common name:Red Mother-of-Thyme
Botanical name:Thymus serpyllum coccineus
Red Mother-of-thyme is a very showy thyme, with its profusion of rosy-red flowers in summer. Plants form thick mats of tiny, luscious green foliage, and though its evergreen, the foliage turns bronze in the fall. A wonderful low-water, low maintenance groundcover to use in place of low-use lawns or for between pavers. Grows about 2 to 3 inches tall and spreads about 12 to 18 inches wide.
Common name:Helene von Stein Lamb's Ear
Botanical name:Stachys byzantina 'Helene von Stein'
'Helene von Stein' is a cultivar or S. byzantina, and is a dense, mat-forming perennial with velvety, soft, grayish white leaves. This cultivar has larger leaves than others and is more heat and humidity resistant. Though reported to not have flowers, eventually, in time, some may begin to appear. The foliage grows to about 8 to 12 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. Use in rock gardens, sunny borders, along walks, and in parkstrips.
Common name:Boulder Blue Fescue
Botanical name:Festuca glauca 'Boulder Blue'
Intense blue coloration makes Boulder Blue a standout in the landscape. Grows 15 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Plumes are green to creamy white, turning wheat colored in the fall. Very upright habit. Taller than F. 'Sea Urchin.' Use in the perennial border or as a groundcover, though it isn't well suited for areas with foot traffic. It does look fabulous surrounding pavers for a walk or patio. Evergreen, or very nearly so.
Common name:Siskiyou Blue Fescue
Botanical name:Festuca idahoensis 'Siskiyou Blue'
This selection of the native Idaho Fescue is notable for its enticing spruce-blue foliage. The thin leaves are much longer than the more familiar Festuca glauca, giving 'Siskiyou Blue' a softer, more graceful look. It blooms in the late spring producing tall, straight tan flower spikes typical of Festuca grass. 12 to 16 inches tall and 12 to 18 wide. Well suited to perennial borders, parkstrips, or meadow-lawns. Evergreen.
Common name:Blue Mist Shrub
Botanical name:Caryopteris x clandonensis
This group of shrubs grows from 2 to 4 feet tall and up to 4 feet wide. All have a mounded form, with gray green to pale green leaves. Flowers appear in mid to late summer, and appear in a range of blue hues, depending on variety. Flowers are clusters of tiny flowers and mostly form and the tips of branches, so cutting the shrubs back hard in the late winter as new growth emerges makes for more flowers.
