Common name:Red Cutleaf Japanese Maple
Botanical name:Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'
This Japanese Maple has an upright, rounded form. Leaves emerge bright red in spring, and deepen to a burgundy-bronze as they age. Fall color is brilliant red. Grows 15 to 18 feet tall and wide, though it will do so slowly.
Common name:Compact Oregon Grape
Botanical name:Mahonia aquifolium 'Compacta'
'Compacta' has the same characteritics of the species: evergreen holly-like spiny leaves, yellow spring flowers, blue-black fruit - but grows only about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide.
Common name:Walkers Low Catmint
Botanical name:Nepeta racemosa 'Walkers Low'
Named after a place in England, not its growth habit, Nepeta "Walker's Low" is a stunning non-reseeding catmint selection with attractive, crinkled blue-green foliage and a profusion of deep lavender-blue flowers that bloom late spring to early summer. A rugged, easy-to-grow addition to any low-water garden, it thrives in hot parkstrips or perennial borders. Grows about 18 to 24 inches tall and wide. The nepeta planted in the Washington Square Demonstration Garden are Walkers Low.
Common name:Variegated Weigela
Botanical name:Weigela florida 'Variegata'
This weigela grows about 6 feet tall and wide, with a rounded, arching to spreading habit typical of the species. Its leaves, however, set it apart, as they are a soft green with creamy white margins that hold all summer. Flowers are a pale, soft pink. 'Variegata Nana' is similar in leave and flower, but it only grows to about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide.
