Water Saving Tip:

Replace turf with groundcovers, trees, and shrubs. If you have areas where no one uses the grass, patches that do not grow well, or a turf area too small to water without runoff, consider replacing the turf with water-efficient landscaping.

Black sagebrush is a Utah native, inhabiting open slopes in shrub-steppe and cool desert plant communities. It has a dense, rounded, compact habit, growing about 1 to 2 feet tall and wide. Its foliage is evergreen, silver to blue-green, with silvery hairs. Bark is grey-brown and twisted. Plant is highly aromatic. A nice sagebrush for the urban landscape due to its tidy habit and compact size.
Grow in full sun and well drained soil, preferrably a little on the coarse side. Tolerates gravelly-clay and sandy soils. Alkaline tolerant. Doesn't require watering once it is established. Does not require pruning, though the foliage is wonderful in vases either fresh or dried.
