Golden Variegated Hakone grass

Common name:Golden Variegated Hakone grass
Botanical name:Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'

Golden Variegated Hakone grass is a lush and graceful ornamental grass. The cascading, hair-like foliage is broad and variegated with cream, chartreuse, and green. Illuminates dark corners and adds texture. Particularly effective planted under shrubs and small trees with contrasting foliage, such as viburnums, hydrangeas, and japanese maple.

Northern Sea Oats

Common name:Northern Sea Oats
Botanical name:Chasmanthium latifolium

A beautiful ornamental grass known for it's showy, drooping seed heads and it's lush green foliage. Grass greens up mid spring, turns a lovely copper color in fall, eventually changing to brown during the winter. The seed heads look like flattened rattle snake rattles, and emerge green, turning to tawny brown in the summer. Very persistent into the winter months. Place in the garden where it will be back lit by the late day sun, where it will illuminate the seed heads. A lovely summer through winter silhouette. Grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide.

Weeping Eastern White Pine

Common name:Weeping Eastern White Pine
Botanical name:Pinus strobus 'Pendula'

‘Pendula’ is a semi-dwarf cultivar of Eastern White pine with weeping, trailing branches that may touch the ground. It typically grows to 6 to 15 feet tall with a larger spread. Form and size is variable depending upon pruning and training. Branches typically spread horizontally for a short distance before drooping. Foliage is green to blue-green. An unusual evergreen accent.

Autumn Fern

Common name:Autumn Fern
Botanical name:Dryopteris erythrosora

Autumn fern is one of the few ferns that will survive in our hot, arid summers. Young fronds have a coppery-red tint that changes to deep green as leaves mature. Grows about 1 to 2 feet high, and spreads about 15 to 18 inches by underground stems. Considered drought tolerant for a fern, but it will require regular watering in our arid climate.

Red Cutleaf Japanese Maple

Common name:Red Cutleaf Japanese Maple
Botanical name:Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'

This Japanese Maple has an upright, rounded form. Leaves emerge bright red in spring, and deepen to a burgundy-bronze as they age. Fall color is brilliant red. Grows 15 to 18 feet tall and wide, though it will do so slowly.

Annabelle Hydrangea

Common name:Annabelle Hydrangea
Botanical name:Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'

Annabelle hydrangea is a no-fuss hydrangea, well suited to a part or filtered-sun border or foundation planting. It has a rounded, dense form, and grows to about 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. Leaves emerge a soft green and slightly pubescent, and grow into roundish, salad-plate-sized leaves. White flowers appear June thru August in huge, symmetrical, rounded heads which typically grow 8 to 12 inches across. Flowers persist well through the fall. Excellent cut fresh or dried. Wonderful in a shrub, mixed, or foundation border.

Water Saving Tip:

Replace turf with groundcovers, trees, and shrubs. If you have areas where no one uses the grass, patches that do not grow well, or a turf area too small to water without runoff, consider replacing the turf with water-efficient landscaping.
